Why isn’t my business showing up on Google?
If you are asking why your business isn’t showing up on Google, the cause is usually in your Google Business Profile: it is missing, unverified, incomplete, or out of date. For a roofer, plumber or HVAC owner, that means customers searching for exactly your work find someone else.
How Google decides who to show
Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches what someone searched for. Distance is how far you are from the searcher. Prominence is how well known you are, which Google ties to things like links from other websites and your reviews. Google also says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking, so the work is in the basics below.
What to check first
- Do you have a profile at all? Search your business name. If no profile appears, you have nothing for Google to show.
- Is it verified? Google says verifying tells it you are authorized to represent the business, and that makes the profile more likely to appear in search results.
- Is the information accurate? Google says that if your info is not accurate, your profile might not show up for relevant searches in your area. Check the name, address or service area, phone number and hours.
- Is it complete? Google says businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to appear. Fill in your services, description, hours and photos of real finished work.
- Do the words match the work? Describe your services the way customers say them. “Roof repair” and “leak in my ceiling” are not the same search.
- Are customers talking about you? Google lists reviews as part of prominence. Ask every customer, and reply to what comes in. Our guide on how to ask for Google reviews shows how.
Why you may still miss some searches
Even a clean profile will not show up first for everyone. A searcher across town may see a closer business ahead of you, and a search for something you do not list may skip you. That is distance and relevance at work, not a penalty. Fix what you control and keep the profile current.
Where a website fits
A website gives Google and customers more to go on: what you do, where you work and photos of finished jobs. It does not replace the profile. Get the profile right, then make the site say the same things. Our post on why a complete Google Business Profile matters covers what customers see.
Questions
Can I pay Google to rank higher in local results?
No. Google says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. What you can do is keep your profile accurate and complete, verify it, and earn reviews.
Does verifying my profile matter?
Yes. Google says verifying your business tells it you are authorized to represent it, which makes the profile more likely to appear in search results.
Why do I show up for some searches and not others?
Google says local results come mainly from relevance, distance and prominence. A searcher across town may see a closer business first, and a profile that does not match the words they used may not appear.
Will a website fix this?
A website helps Google and customers understand what you do, but it does not replace a verified, accurate Business Profile. Start with the profile, then make sure the website says the same things.
